01

What does render repair involve?

Render repair restores damaged areas of an existing rendered wall using an approach suited to the substrate and the cause of the damage. Work may include removing unsound material, preparing the exposed wall, applying compatible repair products and renewing the visible finish.

A narrow crack, an impact mark and a large hollow area can need very different treatment. Assessment considers adhesion, the pattern of cracking, water entry, existing coatings and whether the problem is changing. Some defects need attention from another building specialist before the rendering work can proceed.

02

Benefits of a considered repair

  • A sound base for finishing: loose material is addressed before recoating.
  • A targeted scope: assessment helps distinguish local damage from a wider wall problem.
  • Better finish planning: texture and colour matching can be considered from the start.
  • Protection of sound work: appropriate local repairs may retain unaffected areas where practical.
  • A clearer next step: the repair plan identifies preparation, coating and any other work needed before completion.

Examples of render repairs

01 / LOCAL DAMAGE

A chipped corner or impact mark

A local repair may rebuild the damaged profile with compatible material, followed by texture and coating work to blend it into the wall.

02 / LOSS OF ADHESION

Hollow or lifting render

Unsound sections may need removal and the exposed substrate assessed before reinstating the specified render build-up.

03 / CRACKING OR STAINING

A defect that keeps returning

Changing cracks or moisture marks need investigation of the cause. Repeated surface patching may not be appropriate until movement or water entry is addressed.

04

What we look at before recommending a repair

Useful information includes the age of the render, previous repairs, when the damage appeared and whether it changes after wet weather. We also consider the substrate, wall height, nearby joints, openings, drainage and the condition of the paint or texture.

Photographs help us discuss an enquiry, but they cannot confirm adhesion or diagnose every defect. Wide views and close-ups are both useful. Keep a record of changing cracks and arrange appropriate building assessment where structural movement is suspected.

Follow our guide to useful wall photos and measurements when preparing the enquiry.

05

Will the repair match the existing wall?

Matching depends on the existing grain, colour, age, weathering and application technique. Even a carefully selected repair may remain visible in certain light. A sample can help set expectations before a larger area is completed.

Sometimes recoating a full wall plane, rather than only the patch, gives a more consistent appearance. This is assessed as part of the scope, with suitable stopping points, edges and movement joints retained.

Compare texture-coating profiles and other render finishes when discussing the repaired surface and any wider recoating.

06

From assessment to renewed finish

  1. Discuss and inspect. Record the damage and assess the wall and access.
  2. Identify prerequisites. Resolve relevant moisture or building issues before cosmetic finishing.
  3. Agree the repair scope. Define removal, preparation, repair materials and the finishing area.
  4. Complete compatible repairs. Follow the selected system and preserve designed joints.
  5. Recoat and review. Complete the agreed finish and explain future inspection and care.
07

Arrange a render-repair enquiry

Send your address, photographs, approximate affected area, building height and any history of previous repairs. Include both the whole wall and close-ups of the damage.

Render and Finish welcomes repair enquiries in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Hunter Valley. We can discuss the likely assessment required and whether the project involves a local repair or a wider surface refurbishment.

Use the quote inclusions guide to check that removal, preparation, compatible repairs and the finishing area are clearly identified.

Common questions

Can you fill a crack and paint over it?

Sometimes a local repair is appropriate, but the crack needs assessment first. Active movement, failed joints or water entry can make a simple surface treatment unsuitable.

Does hollow render always need removal?

The extent and cause need inspection. Areas that have lost adhesion may need removal and reinstatement; sound areas can be considered separately when defining the scope.

Can you quote from photographs?

Photos help us understand the enquiry and discuss next steps. A reliable repair specification may still require a site inspection to assess adhesion, extent and underlying causes.

Will repaired cracks come back?

No responsible repair assessment can guarantee that building movement will stop. The result depends on addressing the cause, selecting compatible materials and correctly detailing the wall.
