A CLEARER START

The right finish
starts with
understanding.

01

What is a texture coating?

A texture coating is a decorative finishing layer applied over a prepared, compatible surface. Selected aggregates and binders create the grain, while the product and application method determine the pattern. Many architectural texture products use an acrylic binder.

Texture coating is not the same as levelling a wall with a base render. An even base, suitable primer and any specified protective topcoat work together to produce the completed surface. Different products may be applied by trowel, float, roller or spray, according to their specification.

Learn how acrylic rendering and sand and cement rendering fit into a complete wall specification before choosing the decorative layer.

02

Advantages of texture coatings

  • A defined appearance: fine, medium and coarse profiles let you choose how much texture the wall displays.
  • Visual continuity: a consistent coating can bring prepared wall areas together as one architectural surface.
  • Depth in natural light: grain and pattern create shadow and interest across an exterior.
  • A coordinated colour scheme: suitable products and topcoats can be selected to complement windows, roofing and adjoining materials.
  • Options for new work and refurbishment: sound existing surfaces may be recoated after assessment and appropriate preparation.

A textured surface can soften minor visual variation, but it will not repair loose render, significant unevenness or structural cracks.

For damaged walls, review the render-repair assessment and preparation process before specifying a texture coating.

Examples of texture finishes

01 / FINE GRAIN

A restrained façade finish

A fine granular texture creates a subtle appearance on a home exterior. A sample helps you judge the grain at close range and from the street.

02 / MEDIUM TEXTURE

More visible wall character

A medium profile can give larger wall areas a more pronounced texture while keeping the surface visually consistent.

03 / COARSE OR PATTERNED

An architectural feature

A coarse aggregate or specified scratch-float texture can create stronger shadow and pattern. The effect depends on the product and application technique.

04

How to choose a texture and colour

Look at a physical sample in daylight and consider its appearance beside the roof, windows, paving and neighbouring finishes. Grain size, application direction and colour all influence the result. A small screen image cannot show every detail of a real wall.

Ask whether the selected system needs a protective topcoat, what maintenance is recommended and how future patching or recoating would be approached. For coastal locations, the specification should account for exposure as well as appearance.

Our texture and colour sample guide explains what to review on site. You can also explore Granosite, bagging and other render finishes.

05

What happens beneath the texture?

  1. Check the base. Assess adhesion, defects, moisture, flatness and existing coatings.
  2. Prepare the surface. Complete compatible repairs and basecoat work before the decorative layer.
  3. Agree a sample. Confirm grain, colour and application style.
  4. Apply the system. Follow primer, texture and topcoat requirements and plan sensible stopping points.
  5. Protect and maintain. Allow the specified drying time and follow product-specific care guidance.

Designed movement joints must remain functional. Applying texture across a joint or active crack does not solve movement in the building.

Request a texture-coating quote

Share your address, approximate wall area, photographs of the existing surface and a reference for the texture you prefer. For new construction, send the coating specification and elevations.

We can discuss preparation and finish requirements for homes, strata properties and commercial projects in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Hunter Valley. The quote should distinguish base repairs from the decorative coating and any protective topcoat.

Common questions

Is texture coating just thick paint?

Texture products contain materials that create a specific surface profile. Their application and system requirements differ from ordinary wall paint, and some need a separate protective topcoat.

Can a texture coating hide cracks?

A coating should not be used to conceal active cracks or unstable render. The cause and repair method need assessment before the finish is applied.

Can you match an existing texture?

A sample can help establish a close match, but age, colour fading and application technique may leave a visible difference. Recoating a larger wall area may give a more consistent appearance.

Which texture is best for my house?

The choice depends on your preferred appearance, substrate, exposure and maintenance expectations. Review a product-specific sample on site before deciding.
