Rendering for pools, bathrooms and walls

Where a wall sits and what comes next matter as much as its appearance. Explore how rendering is used in swimming pools, bathrooms, interiors and exteriors, with practical considerations for residential and commercial projects across Newcastle, the Central Coast and Hunter Valley.

A CLEARER START

The right finish
starts with
understanding.

01

Swimming pool rendering

Pool rendering shapes and levels a suitable concrete pool shell to prepare it for the specified waterproofing and final lining or tiles. It can help establish a consistent surface around walls, curves and detailed junctions before the next trade proceeds.

Example: Preparing a sound concrete shell for a coordinated tiled-pool system. ARDEX publishes a system in which rendering, priming, waterproofing and tiling are separate stages.

What matters: The render and all subsequent layers must suit the pool’s substrate, immersion conditions and chosen finish. Ordinary façade render is not automatically a finished pool surface or a waterproof lining. Existing shell cracks and joints need assessment before the preparation scope is confirmed.

02

Bathroom and wet-area rendering

Rendering can straighten and level suitable masonry bathroom walls before waterproofing and tiling. It helps create a consistent base where old tiles have been removed or the existing wall needs preparation.

Example: Preparing brick shower walls for the specified membrane and tile system. The benefit is a more suitable surface for the layers that follow.

What matters: The render must reach the condition required by the selected membrane manufacturer. Rendering does not replace wet-area waterproofing. Render, membrane, adhesive and tiles need to be compatible. If you want an exposed decorative finish, its suitability for splash zones or direct shower exposure must be assessed separately.

03

Internal wall rendering

Internal rendering prepares suitable masonry for paint, a plaster finish or a decorative surface. It can cover exposed brickwork and bring adjoining areas into a more consistent visual finish.

Example: Levelling an interior brick wall during a renovation, or preparing a reception wall for an architectural finish. Advantages include an even base and greater choice over the final appearance.

The existing wall, old paint, moisture and required finish determine preparation. A render basecoat and a polished decorative plaster are different layers, so share the final look you want at the quotation stage.

04

External wall and façade rendering

External rendering creates a consistent surface on suitable exterior walls before the specified texture and protective coating. Cement-based, acrylic and modified systems offer different options depending on the substrate.

Example: Updating a brick home façade or finishing correctly installed wall panels. Rendering provides a coordinated appearance and a base for the chosen colour and texture.

For coastal properties around Newcastle and the Central Coast, exposure helps guide product selection. Existing coatings, joints, window junctions and moisture issues also need attention. Designed movement joints must remain functional; a render coating cannot prevent the building underneath from moving.

05

Garden, boundary and retaining walls

Rendering can give suitable masonry garden or boundary walls a finish that complements the house. It is useful for visually unifying blockwork, piers and other landscape elements.

Retaining walls need particular care because water can reach the wall from the soil side. Drainage, wall construction and any required waterproofing must be considered before coating the visible face. Applying decorative render to the front does not resolve water pressure or moisture entering from behind. The preparation and finish should follow an assessment of those conditions.

06

Commercial and multi-residential rendering

Commercial rendering covers applications such as exterior façades, common areas, entries and prepared interior masonry. A coordinated specification helps maintain a consistent finish across larger wall areas and different construction stages.

Example: Pricing a rendering package from a builder’s drawings and finish schedule for an apartment or townhouse project.

Useful quotation details include substrates, approximate quantities, access requirements, finish samples, staging and the programme for adjoining trades. The specified substrate system and project documentation guide product selection, junction detailing and sequencing. For Hunter Valley projects, the site location and travel arrangements also help define the scope.

Common questions

Can the same render be used everywhere?

No. Indoor walls, external façades and submerged pools have different demands. The substrate, exposure and following coating or tile layers determine the suitable system.

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the job address, wall photos, approximate measurements and the intended finish. For pool, bathroom or commercial work, include available plans and the proposed waterproofing or coating specification.

Can rendering fix damp or recurring cracks?

Their cause needs assessment first. Render can form part of a repair scope, but an additional coating alone will not resolve active structural movement or a moisture source behind the wall.
